JEAN GAUTHERIN ( 1840 - 1890)

Born in the commune of Ouroux-en-Morvan in 1840, Jean Gautherin began his life as a sculptor relatively early, when he was still a child, remaining in the valleys of the Morvan while his parents had gone to Paris to seek a better life. . Looking after his neighbour's sheep, he carved small sticks which he offered to his comrades. Called to Paris by a friend of his father, he thus made his debut in the career of the arts. Entered the School of Fine Arts in 1864, rapid progress made him admitted to the Salon in 1865. He then exhibited until his death.
His first great success was the plaster of Saint Sebastian which he then carved in marble. He then worked for the city of Paris, the casino of Monte-Carlo, the cathedrals of Marseille and Nevers where he sculpted a stone bas-relief representing the martyrdom of Saint Cyr and Saint Julithe which decorates the high altar.
His most famous works are: Clotilde de Surville, symbol of maternity, the group of Paradise Lost, at the Champs-Elysées Palace, the statues of Diderot, on the place of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Work in the gardens of Luxembourg, Industry and Commerce at the Trocadero... He models for the Christofle house the motifs of the Seasons which adorn the candelabra of a table service. His works can also be found in Copenhagen, with the statue of the Empress of Russia, Maria Féodorowna, widow of Alexander III.
He nevertheless spent all his holidays in Montsauche, and made several models in the cantonal museum. About fifteen of his original works are in Nevers, since he founded, with the painter Hanoteau and the sculptor Boisseau, the Society of Friends of the Arts of Nièvre. He died at the dawn of his fifties, at the height of his talent, and was buried in Paris. (patrimone morvan)
