Who is this Black Marianne? - A woman wearing a Phrygian cap whose edges harmoniously frame her face - This face, with its high cheekbones, flared nostrils, slightly open mouth, and half-closed eyes, evokes an African model - Her headdress identifies her as Marianne, the embodiment of the French Republic - Is she the work of an African artist proclaiming their adherence to the values of the Republic, or of a French artist dreaming of a universal Marianne? - Is she singing of her pain or her anger, submission or resistance? A lament or a song? Both? - Many mysteries surround this powerful work, which appears to be from the Art Deco period - It should be noted that the Toulouse Resistance Museum possesses a Black Marianne dating from 1848, a Masonic work by a certain Bernard Griffoul-Dorval, which has generated much controversy and many twists and turns.
