    Netsuke - carved wood, depicting a rat climbing on a head of dried salmon, (shiozake), a classic Japanese New Year dish (Shogatsu). The carved fish is presented with its mouth open, revealing the teeth inside, and the seated rat is about to feast on its booty. The reverse is decorated with a Himotoshi. The eyes are inlaid with brown horn. Edo period (1615-1868) Japan, 19th century.
