Spanish-Flemish Madonna in polychrome and gilded wood
Early 18th century
height 40 cms
width 27 cms
good condition
The iconography of this powerful yet highly symbolic sculpture brings our Madonna closer to the Black Virgins.
Hooded and wrapped in a heavy blue cloak over a golden gown, head raised to the sky, hands clasped in the center of the chest from which 7 rays of Light emerge, our Madonna masters a vanity, symbol of death, with one foot, and the apple snake, symbol of Evil, with the other.
The rendering of the cloak's heaviness and the work on the pleating of the cloak and dress are of great virtuosity.
