    JAPAN - Meiji Period (1868–1912).
    Carved, molded, red-and-gold-lacquered temple armchair with a curved backrest featuring geometric decoration, scroll-shaped armrests, a black leather seat, and an X-shaped folding base with a footrest. The piece is adorned with gilded copper plaques in a scalloped shape, engraved with stylized chrysanthemums on a nanako background. The reverse side of the backrest bears the Ishikawa clan crest and three Chinese characters.
    Very slight damage to the copper plaques on the base. 
    Dimensions: 104 x 112 x 44 cm.
    Notes: Placed in ceremonial halls or reception areas of temples, these seats attest to the refinement of Japanese craftsmanship and the importance placed on the dignity of religious ceremonies.
