Maison Lecan presents this pair of solid oak benches, France, 1950s. This type of furniture, designed for schools, waiting rooms, and institutions during the French Reconstruction era, combines robust construction with meticulous attention to detail. The oak is thick, the grain highly graphic, and the patina dark and even, built up over decades of communal use. They are in their original condition, untouched.
The gently curved, hollowed armrests are the centerpiece: their sculpted profile visually lightens an otherwise very solid structure. The plank backrest with its rounded upper edge and the sled legs connected by a low stretcher complete a set designed to last. The design reflects the spirit of the French Reconstruction movement, reminiscent of the Mobilier National furniture of the 1950s.
