Suite of 4 mahogany chairs with curved backs adorned with a tripod Athenian resting on goat hooves. Elegantly profiled in curves and counter-curves, carved from all angles: sophisticated yet with a false simplicity. Work from the Directoire period, very late 18th century, circa 1795-1800. The 4 chairs are stamped Demay rue de Clery.

Jean-Baptiste Bernard Demay (1759-1848), Master in 1784, was one of the great chair carpenters who practiced in Paris, on rue de Cléry like most of his colleagues. Although he began his career under the ancien régime, he quickly achieved a certain success, supplying Queen Marie-Antoinette (Petit Trianon). He continued his career after the Revolution, changing his stamp to "Demay rue de Clery". He was successful under the Consulate until the end of the Empire, with a highly polished production.

For its complete restoration, we chose to retain the horsehair trim on its original straps, with a brand-new pad varnish that brings out the mahogany and ebony and brass fillets. And for the cover, we opted for a black horsehair fabric woven on hand looms. Today, only one company in France and the rest of the world manufactures this luxury fabric. Old restorations and reinforcements.
