A chair from the Fiume factory; the city of Fiume—now Rijeka—was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire on the Adriatic Sea. Chairs from Fiume are frequently marked “FIUME” or “Charles Chevallier,” but the chair shown here—whose model, to my knowledge, is not identified in major collections—is stamped: “MOEBEL FABRIK- LANDESBANK”. This chair was produced at a time when regional banks were financing the Empire’s industry. I am including a label that was found on this type of chair, dating from around 1885–90. The label is shown for historical purposes and is not attached to the chair.
The cane work is recent; the chair is stable and sturdy and suitable for everyday use. Total height: 90 cm – seat height: 47 cm – seat dimensions: 41 x 43 cm.
