"Jean-Baptiste III Lelarge (1743-1802) Carpenter. Master on February 1, 1775. Son and grandson of carpenters in seats bearing the same first name and also established rue de Cléry, Jean Baptiste III Lelarge produced seats of Transition and Louis XVI style of an undeniable class.

Jean-Baptiste III Lelarge was one of the best chair carpenters of the reign of Louis XVI. Born into a family of carpenters, Jean-Baptiste III of the name carried out his apprenticeship on the rue de Cléry in the workshop of his father, Jean Baptiste II, and succeeded him after receiving his letters of mastery.

Although the archives of the Garde-Meuble do not mention his name, he worked extensively for a rich French and foreign clientele, including the King of Portugal. It is possible that he made - during the first years of his career - Louis XV chairs, but the use of the same stamp as his father's does not confirm this. That is why only the Louis XVI models are commonly attributed to him. The majority of Jean-Baptiste Lelarge's chairs have a very beautiful appearance: robust, without heaviness, rigorously constructed, impeccably assembled, they are decorated with simple moldings or fine and incisive sculptures, well distributed, without overload.

In Lelarge's models, we notice a predominance of medallion-backed seats, which we find today in quite a large number. This back is often supported by two curved uprights, carved with acanthus leaves. We also find armchairs and chairs with square, rectangular, snowshoe, hat or basket handle backs, as well as bergères, sofas and beds of different shapes. Towards the end of the reign of Louis XVI, Lelarge made open-backed chairs, which were very fashionable at the time, in mahogany or gilded wood. Among the most emblematic pieces of furniture of his career, we can note, for the ingenuity of its design, a reclining chair with a backrest that rests on small wheels operated by a crank, made around 1785 for an invalid or a patient. His company is still present after the Revolution and one notes an activity until the death of the carpenter. ("Mobilier et Ebenistes du XVIIIème")
