At the end of his life, Matisse created monumental compositions using cut-out gouache paper, some of which he intended for ceramic works.
The model of the Swimming Pool, created in 1952, is one of the masterpieces that marks the painter's final period before his death in Nice in 1954. There, he achieved the visual expression he was seeking. Matisse had created it not far from there, at the Regina, where it was pinned to the walls of his apartment-studio.

This preparatory model was originally acquired in 1972 by the largest American museum: the MOMA in New York.

In the 1980s, Claude Duthuit, at the request of the Ministry of Culture, had the monumental ceramic work created by the sculptor Hans Spinner.

The Musée Niçois has become the owner of the most important collection of Matisse's works. By integrating this large-scale piece in every respect, it is one of the rare large compositions created after his death using the technique the artist intended.

    Dimensions: 545 x 75.5 cm
Condition: Some slight stains throughout the rug, with color differences in the brown, particularly visible when looking at the sides. It remains a very high-quality rug in good overall condition.
