Verdure tapestry, Marche workshops (Aubusson region), late 17th - early 18th century.

    - This wool and silk tapestry depicts verdure with character, vegetation appearing with great strength and vitality. This effect is achieved by the movement of the tree trunks, the abundance of foliage, and the luminous power of light tones juxtaposed in contrast with dark greens and browns.

    - Verdures" is one of the favorite themes of Marchois tapestry, a mass production that was widely exported to a clientele delighted to find a decorative object that refreshed their interiors, and even more so when these weavings were hung together to form a "chambre de verdures".

-In the Marche region, two towns on the banks of the Creuse made tapestry a thriving and prosperous business: Aubusson and Felletin. In business since the 15th century, thanks to the region's well-established tapestry-making tradition and extensive sheep farming, the Marche's private workshops expanded rapidly.
