Anthropomorphic STATUETTE called Bateba
Culture Lobi, Burkina Faso
First half of the 20th century
H .: 20; L .: 4.5; Thickness: 5 cm
Particularly geometric, this statuette stands upright, arms at your sides. The shoulders extend to the front of the bust in two beaks. Its umbilicus is in light relief just like its sex. Its oval face has tapered almond eyes included in hollow rectangles, its small ears are C-shaped, its elongated nose and its coffee bean mouth. The spine is straight and hollow, its buttocks short and rectangular in relief. Although the legs are confused, the folds of the knees are well signified.
The particularity of these bateba statuettes is their association with Thil, the spirit of the bush. When an evil spirit had come into the possession of an individual, it had to be trapped in order to free the man. A bateba statuette, to which libations were given, was then carved to attract the evil spirit.
