A superb object, which could be purchased at the Palais Royal galleries in the early 19th century for a gift charged with meaning; a box in powdered horn and tortoiseshell, hot-molded, with a beautiful antique-style composition on the lid, presented by two vestals from the Temple of Love, and an unequivocal rebus: Fidélité, Amour, Amitié, font tour à tour les roses de la Vie.... The underside of the box features guilloché decoration, and the circumference of the lid is inlaid with polished steel discs, alternating with gold inlays, which contrast with the seriousness of the black background. A beautiful, elegant object for its time: a prestigious gift.
Dimensions: approx. 2.15cmH x 6.3cmD,
Late Empire or early Restoration period.
Good overall condition, two small gold inlays missing, very faintly visible, some edge wear.
