Wrought iron, forged from a single piece, stretched and twisted into various serpentine branches. Both offerings and apotropaic symbols, these "rain irons" were used in ritual dances, alone or in clusters, to attract rain and good fortune for the coming harvests. Rainmakers were considered powerful protectors by the Mumuye people, hence the use of dynamic, sharp or undulating figures, reminiscent of lightning or the serpent dance. When at rest, they were planted in the ground, symbolizing the unbreakable bond between heaven and earth, and acting as true catalysts for vital forces and elements connected to the divine.
