Kangling, or Tibetan flute, made from a bone, femur or tibia sheathed in richly decorated silver.
This magical instrument was intended to ward off evil spirits. It was made from a human bone, normally a victim of a brutal death. The silver sheath is finely chased, decorated with two coiled dragons and foliage. Two turquoise stones are set at either end, along with rings used to attach a cord or chain.
This object, from a private collection, dates from the 19th century.
