A magnificent mid-19th-century pocket box featuring polychrome rye straw marquetry
A travel souvenir brought back from Lugano, a work of the highest quality. This city in Italian-speaking Switzerland and the Great Lakes were must-see destinations on the “Grand Tour” undertaken by the wealthy European bourgeoisie in the 19th century.
The lid and all four sides of this box are entirely decorated with geometric motifs featuring fine mosaic work in a checkerboard or basketweave pattern.
The exceptional interior of the lid and the body of the box is adorned with geometric motifs in the shape of diamond points and rhombuses that play with the reflections of the straw.
The inscription “Lugano” is inlaid in a central cartouche beneath the base.

Note: there is a tiny drying crack in the core wood beneath the base that runs through the inscription; no straw is missing.
This box is in very good, fresh condition.
