SIKES'S HYDROMETER CASE
England, early 20th century
Brass, wood, velvet
Case dimensions: 20.5 x 10 cm
Instrument for verifying the alcohol content of beverages for commercial transactions and tax collection.
The gilt brass hydrometer comes with nine weights marked in increments of 10, from 10 to 90. These are notched discs that can be placed above the lower bulb of the instrument, thus altering its weight and therefore its equilibrium position when immersed.

The thermometer is graduated in degrees Fahrenheit from 2 to 120.
Wooden case with marquetry trim and a cartouche marked SIKES’S HYDROMETER – J; WHITE OPTICIAN GLASGOW. The interior is lined with red velvet. Our copy is number 5993.
Good condition.
