French private collection.
The Dogon practice four main cults: the Lébé for fertility, the Wagem for ancestors, the Binou for spirits, and the Awa mask society for funerals. During the "dama" ritual, which aims to restore order after a death, the Dogon use animal masks to protect themselves from the soul of the deceased, called "nyama". The Walu mask, representing order, discourages spectators from getting too close to the dancers. This is followed by a pantomime recounting the legend of the mythical walu, each village having its own masks with particular meanings.
A universal (€35) or custom-made (€45) base can be ordered with the mask.
The piece comes with its certificate of authenticity.
