Mask featuring a delicate face surrounded by a jagged collar ending in a goatee. The mouth is forward and round. The eyes are half-closed as a sign of respect and are framed by eyebrows forming two semicircles that meet at the start of a slender, long nose. Scarification marks adorn the cheeks and corners of the eyes. A finely chiselled hairstyle in three arcs of circles completes the face. A standing bird tops the mask.
This "Anoman" mask is used in the "Dje" dance. It is the fourth of the seven dancing masks. It originally appeared around the deceased to purify him or her. He also acts as an intermediary between the visible and invisible worlds.
Wood with age-old patina (a few missing pieces on the collar, crack).
