Former Guy Mercier African art collection.

Among the Lega, the Bwami society, open to men and women, organized social and political life. It included up to seven levels of initiation, each represented by distinct emblems. After migrating from Uganda in the 17th century, the Lega settled along the west bank of the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. To obtain social recognition and authority, each individual had to demonstrate qualities such as good heart (mutima), character, intelligence and impeccable behavior. During the rituals, initiates were presented with Idumu masks, arranged on a barrier and surrounded by smaller masks. These masks were used during the Bwami's initiation rites, symbolizing the acquisition of wisdom and morality with each grade.
