Old Markha mask in wood and metal.
The Marka, also known as Maraka in Bambara, Warka or Sarakolé, are a group of urban Muslims of Soninke origin. Their presence extends from southern Niger to Mali, via Mauritania and Senegal, forming a dispersed community since the end of the Ghana empire. Today, the Marka speak mainly Bambara and have integrated many of this culture's traditions, including initiation societies such as the Ntomo and Koré, who use masks in their ceremonies. Bambara and Marka sculptors of African art, belonging to the Numuw group, are not specifically linked to any particular ethnic group and are free to set up wherever they like.
