ANTROPO-ZOOMORPH MASK
Djimini -Ligbi culture, Ivory Coast
First half of the 20th century
Copper alloy
H. 27.5; L. 16 cm
The distinctive feature of this mask is its anthropomorphic face: tapering chin marked by a collared beard and a goatee incised with oblique, saw-toothed lines, almond-shaped openwork eyes and mouth surrounded by a small bead, temples marked with geometric scarification and two C-shaped ears; associated with a zoomorphic figure: the fertilizing hornbill (yangaleya) taking the place of the nasal ridge. The avian figure's neck stretches from the forehead to the tip of the chin, forming a sinuous crest in slight relief. Its eyes are pastilated and the top of its head adorned with three feathers.
Two lateral horns complete the mask.
The hornbill is a particularly important bird in Djimini-Ligbi mythology.
