I offer you this large Sukuma mask from Tanzania.
It was collected in Burundi in the 70s, then passed on to another collector to whom I bought it by inheritance.
The Sukuma people live in the north of Tanzania in a region south of Lake Victoria. Their masks have a very raw and expressive aspect and belonged to secret societies that were banned after 1905.
Some of the holes seem to have been filled with resin, the teeth are made of bamboo, the eyes are underlined with white, the inside is attacked by woodborers, height 37 cm, end of the 19th or beginning of the 20th century, these masks are quite rare.
