A powerful Dogon statuette with a compact form and a surprisingly intense presence, carved from ancient wood deeply weathered by time. The body, with its taut verticality, features arms pressed against the chest, a narrow torso, and massive legs, reflecting the purest tradition of ancestral Dogon figures.
The thick, layered, crusty patina bears witness to a long history of ritual use: sacrificial deposits, amalgamated dust, traces of ointments, and repeated handling. This mineral-like, almost fossilized skin lends the work a telluric intensity and a profoundly sacred character.
The face, reduced to its essentials, is characterized by abrupt geometry: a prominent chin and a marked forehead, accentuating the impression of a mediating figure turned toward the invisible.
This statuette exudes a rare, magnetic presence typical of ancient Dogon works, whose power stems as much from the sculpture itself as from the ritual accumulations that cover it.
