A votive sculpture depicting a sacred twin, or ibeji, from the Yoruba tradition in Nigeria. This figure is distinguished by its remarkable sculptural presence and deep ritual patina, evidence of long-term use in worship.
Standing on a circular base, the figure displays a balanced frontal posture, with the arms at the sides of the body and the hands resting on the thighs. The head, subtly oversized in accordance with Yoruba aesthetics to emphasize spiritual awareness (ori), is crowned by a tall, finely striated headdress. The face is animated by powerfully chiseled almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose, and carefully incised lateral scarifications, which define the figure’s contours and affirm its cultural identity.
The neck is adorned with an ancient beaded necklace, reflecting the intimate care given to the Ibeji in the context of domestic rituals. The piece as a whole features a dark, lustrous patina, enriched by lighter areas of wear resulting from repeated handling and ritual anointings (palm oil, libations of African rosewood powder, osun, and care bestowed over time).
With its formal balance and the finesse of its carving, this Ibeji ranks among the most accomplished expressions of this tradition. Preserved for over 80 years in a discreet private collection, it now constitutes an exceptional rediscovery, whose aesthetic quality naturally invites comparison with the famous examples from the former Xavier Richer collection, now housed at the Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac.
