Rare Bongo statue from South Sudan, originally on top of a buried post, but probably detached by erosion.
Significant gullied patina due to a long stay outdoors, especially as this is a very hard wood chosen for outdoor use. According to the file on these statues published in art tribal, it could be from the Tonj region, by a sculptor recognizable by his square eyes. These statues are very rare on the market, and fetch record prices.
Height 104 cm, light wood, grayed in places, traces of red polychromy near the mouth, it is hollow and partly filled with red earth, the arms glued to the body and the shape of the hands can be guessed.
