Rider statues among the Dogon represent revered chiefs of old, who were the only ones to own a horse.
These statues attracted their protection for a village or a wealthy family.
This one has a rich, dark, dry, slightly crusty patina. The wood is worn, attesting to its age (probably late 19th or early 20th century).
The whole is harmonious, finely carved from a very hard, heavy wood.
The rider appears to be holding a weapon in his quiver.
The statue is in good overall condition, showing some wear and stains, but not missing. Height 58 cm.
Note its beautiful stylized, minimalist form, a superb work of art from my personal collection that fits in with any style, classic or very modern!
