Ex Belgian collection
This African sculpture depicts an ancestor kneeling on a circular base. The ancestor's head is adorned with a finely chiselled crest, and his face features slanted eyes that accentuate the tapering shape of his nose. His pursed lips give his face a determined, concentrated expression.
Most Dogon statues are commissioned by specific families, but they can also be revered by the whole community, particularly when they commemorate events such as the founding of a village. Although the precise functions of these statues remain largely unknown, Dogon religious rites revolve around four main cults. The cult of the Lébé, associated with fertility, is placed under the spiritual authority of the Hogon. The Wagem cult, dedicated to the ancestors, is led by the patriarch. The Binou evokes the spirit world and is overseen by the Binou priest. Finally, the mask society plays a significant role at funerals. These cults occupy an important place in the religious life of the Dogon, often coexisting with Islam in their region.
