Notes: Noh theater is a traditional form of Japanese theater that emerged in the 14th century. It is considered one of the oldest theatrical genres still practiced today and combines acting, singing, music, and dance in a highly codified performance.
Actors often wear carved masks that allow them to portray different characters, such as spirits, deities, or legendary heroes. The stage is minimalist, with few props, which emphasizes the actors’ movements and performances.
In 2008, Noh theater was inscribed on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, thereby recognizing its importance to the world’s cultural heritage.
