Culture Tshokwé, Democratic Republic of Congo
First half of the 20th century
    Wood and pigments
    H .: 31; L .: 20; Thickness: 13 cm
    (accident)

Mask in carved wood and worked in incisions representing scarifications on the cheeks, temples and forehead. The stylized star shape is characteristic of Mwana Pwo.
Her mouth with thin lips is parted, her half-closed eyes are cut out in two slivered almonds and underlined by incised crescent eyebrows. Her C-shaped ears are embossed.
It is crowned with a large shell cap entirely streaked and pigmented in blue.

Mwana Pwos masks are the most important masks of this matrilineal culture: they are the representation of the "beautiful young girl". Both ancestral spirit and representation of beauty, they symbolize the primordial role of women.
