Catlinite and wood
Furnace dimensions: H.: 11.3; L.: 22.2 cm
Total length: 71.3 cm
The pipe bowl is made of L-shaped catlinite with a slightly flared chimney and a darker patina. It is mounted on a flat wooden pipe and bears the handwritten date "7-17-55".
The pipe is linked to a ritual practice. Smoking a pipe could be used to commemorate an event, inaugurate a facility or celebrate an important event.
The smoke was said to rise up to heaven, where the Great Creator resides.
The pipes were kept in long skin bags decorated with quillwork or beading.
