Sacred pigskin
Vanuatu
First half of the 20th century
Bone, tooth
H. 8,9 ; Length : 23,5 ; L. : 14 cm
Pig's jaw with tusks.
These pigs were bred to have their tusks grow artificially to take on a circular shape.
The more the tusks reached the circle, the more the pig was considered sacred.
The national emblem of Vanuatu depicts a warrior chief with a tooth curved in a circle behind him.
This symbol indicates the importance of "toothed pigs" to this country; the curved tusks are linked to the image of the chief and social status.
