    Important Shamanic Gourd Rattle
Canela Indians, Maranhão State, Amazon, Northeast Brazil
Wood, gourd, pigments, horn, and fibers
H: 33 cm (excluding pendants); Diam: 18 cm

Large rattle made from a hollowed-out gourd and a cylindrical wooden handle. The musical instrument is heavily filled with seeds and sand and features an openwork design painted with genipapo—a fruit whose pulp is unique in that it contains black pigments—organized around a geometric frieze. It has a braided red cord strap adorned with horn beads—likely tapir horn.

Collected in situ by the renowned ethnographer and indigenous studies expert João Américo Peret in the late 1950s.

    Provenance:
    - Formerly in the collection of João Américo Peret, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

    - Formerly in a private American collection.

Bibliography: A similar example is reproduced in William H. Crocker's *The Canela (Eastern Timbuira)*, Vol. I: An Ethnographic Introduction, Smithsonian Institution Press, 1990, p. 474, fig. a.
