Delightful Bamiléké helmet mask from the Baleng region, Cameroon, dating from the first half of the 20th century. Remarkable for its age and sculpture, this large royal mask was used by secret societies and was only taken out on rare occasions linked to the image of the Fo' o (chief). It was not worn, but displayed in the market or chiefdom square, enthroned next to the chief. Expressionist in design and perfectly in keeping with the demanding corpus, it represents a human head surmounted by two horns, with an expressive face marked by puffy cheeks and wide-open eyes. This iconography personifies a man of power (a great notable or chief) and the horns of the buffalo, a totemic animal, confer power and strength on him. Made of hardwood, it shows its patina of use.
Good condition.
