Jean de La Fontinelle was born in 1900. In 1929, he exhibited at the Artistes Animaliers show in Paris, rubbing shoulders with painters Paul Jouve and André Margat, as well as sculptors Charles Artus, Raymond Bigot and François Pompon. He befriended Roger Godchaux and Henri Valette, who like him specialized in animal sculpture, and La Fontinelle's animal forms are simple and gentle. He produced many ceramic subjects, but his bronze sculptures are rarer.
