Japan, early 20th century, very attractive statue in wood and polychrome plaster with gilding representing the monk Nichiren Shonin (1222-1282), founder of one of the great Zen schools of Mahayana Buddhism called Nichiren Shu in the Kamakura period. The Master is depicted in full ceremonial dress, seated on a raised throne. He holds a scroll in his left hand and a scepter in his right. The eyes are made of glass. Gilded brass decoration around the base of the throne.
Good condition, apart from a few chips. The colors are very fresh.
Height 20.5 cm. Width 17 cm. The scale indicator on the last photograph is a small lighter of a well-known brand.
