Magnificent duo of large repoussé and patinated copper trays dating from the late 19th century. Each of these trays recounts a glorious page in history, with striking scenes depicting Charlemagne's coronation and his demise. The upper section features a medallion depicting Charlemagne wearing a majestic crown, surrounded by the Latin inscription "Carlus Magnus". This imperial evocation is accompanied by chained figures, surrounded by knightly emblems such as helmets, swords, chain mail and shields, symbols of strength and honor. The bottom of the tray reveals another rich iconography: the goddess of justice, Themis, enthroned in a medallion surrounded by putti carrying trumpets. This representation evokes the fairness and legitimacy of Charlemagne's reign. In the center, each tray features characters dressed in medieval garb, in solemn postures, accentuating the narrative and historical character of these unique works. These trays combine the finesse of repoussé with the elegance of decoration. They are a choice piece for lovers of decorative art, medieval history or discerning collectors in search of rare, meaningful objects. In very good original condition and with a beautiful patina, these trays are not just decorative: they embody a sculpted fragment of the Carolingian heritage.
Charlemagne, born probably in 748, was King of the Franks from 768, then Emperor of the West from 800. Son of Pepin the Short, he extended his empire through numerous conquests in Europe, notably against the Saxons and Lombards. He was crowned emperor in Rome by Pope Leo III, marking the rebirth of the Roman Empire in the West. A promoter of education and the arts, he initiated the Carolingian Renaissance. He died in Aachen in 814, leaving a major political and cultural legacy.
