Pair of large Japanese baluster vases made during the Meiji era.
Made of cloisonné enamels, these vases have a polychrome decoration representing the Japanese army made up of horsemen mounted on white horses and characters holding poles decorated with flags. They seem to be advancing on a stream lined with vegetation.
This scene is completed at the top and bottom by stylized motifs representing foliage and large flowers in white, blue and red.
The neck and the base are provided with geometric ornaments contrasting with the main decoration and highlighting it. These friezes have the same colorimetry.
Each piece has a stamp engraved in Japanese characters on the bottom.
These two vases impress with their size and powerful illustration of 19th century Japanese traditions.
