Full-shaped cup in Algerian onyx marble, gilded bronze and polychrome enamels
Signed E.CORNU PARIS on the barrel, Napoleon III period
The neck of the vase is topped with a wide gilded bronze band decorated with a very fine oriental decoration in “champlevé” enamels with dominant red, blue and white.
Lotus flowers in “paisley” frames alternate with a series of three flower vases under a Moorish arcade. A multitude of foliage scrolls stand out from the background. This decoration is highlighted in the lower part by a frieze of flowers standing out against a red. Two handles in chiseled and gilded bronze are applied and take up this plant repertoire made of scrolls and staples. The golden pedestal is also decorated with a very elegant enameled decoration of free hanging flowers or framed in a drop-shaped cartouche of great polychrome freshness.
The entire cup rests on a small circular marble base.

The very high quality of the decoration combined with the abundant use of Algerian onyx marble allows us to attribute this achievement to Louis-François-Eugène Cornu, at the same time a great designer, creator and manufacturer of decorative art objects under the reign of Napoleon III. Along with Ferdinand Barbedienne or Bernard-Alfred Meyer, he was considered one of the best manufacturers of Parisian luxury objects during the Second Empire.
