Mythology: The poets attribute to Triton another office than that of being trumpet of Poseidon, that of calming the waves and of making cease the storms. Thus, according to Ovid, Poseidon, wanting to recall the waters of the flood of Deucalion, orders Triton to inflate his conch, to the sound of which the waters withdraw. According to Virgil, when Poseidon wants to calm the storm that Hera has excited against Aeneas, Triton, assisted by the Nereid Cymothoe, makes his efforts to save the stranded ships. The poets admit several "tritons" with the same functions and the same figure.
