A molded black marble inkwell and pen holder, surmounted by a bronze statuette with a brown patina representing Michelangelo's "Moses." The statue of Moses, executed around 1513-1515 for the Tomb of Julius II in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, is a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance. The Renaissance, like the Middle Ages, was a rich source of inspiration for 19th-century artists, who delighted in imitating or interpreting the works of past centuries.
Our inkwell features a gilt bronze inkwell positioned in the center of the marble base. 19th century. The absence of a reduction mark and the presence of the simple monogram "LB" suggest a late 19th-century edition. During the Napoleon III era, many Parisian bronze casters (such as the L. Blanc firm or other manufacturers of high-end office furniture) did not use patented reduction processes. They created their own fixed-size molds for decorative pieces (like this inkwell). The monogram "LB" then served as a workshop mark or trademark to protect their design against fraudulent overmolding.
