Lovely oval miniature, painted on paper or vellum, in Indian ink and enhanced with light vermilion touches.
The subject is a gallant declaration of love, very finely executed.
The artist's hand is easily recognizable: he is Gustave Klingstedt, (Riga 1657 + Paris 1734), a miniaturist of Swedish origin, much in demand at the European Courts, nicknamed the Raphael of snuffboxes, he produced some highly sought-after erotic miniatures.... Schidloff, in his dictionary of miniature painting, has written an exhaustive article on this artist, who did not sign, and was of course imitated, but here, the quality is not in doubt! Several of his works are in the Stockholm Museum, the Louvre, the Wallace , Aix....
Our miniature probably comes from the inner lid of a now-defunct snuffbox.
The 18th-century gilded bronze frame is superb, with a rocaille pediment with ribbons, and period blown glass (2 small chips).
Dimensions: 9cm x 9cm.
Condition: excellent, untouched, a small museum piece, from the LOUIS XIV or Régence period...
