I am selling this exquisite pair of large, color optical views dating from around 1740, depicting scenes of Rome, including iconic landmarks such as the Trevi Fountain and Castel Sant'Angelo, the former papal residence. The first view features a beautiful panorama of the famous Trevi Fountain, a Baroque masterpiece and one of Rome's cultural highlights. At the bottom of the image, a group of Roman aristocrats in court dress can be seen in front of the fountain, or in magnificent ceremonial carriages in the two lower corners.
The second optical view depicts the renowned Castel Sant'Angelo, the Ponte Aeliano, and the ancient walls of the old city. A number of sailing boats are visible on the Tiber River, and in the background, St. Peter's Basilica, the seat of the Papacy, can be seen.
These two works were printed by the two largest Parisian printers of the mid-18th century: Dumont on Rue St. Martin and Basset on Rue St. Jacques. The high quality of the compositions, the mastery of perspective, and the beautiful, vibrant colors are also noteworthy.
(Minor signs of wear: foxing and small traces of dampness)
