    CANIVET, SAINT ANNA, 18TH CENTURY

Canivet in paper finely cut and enhanced in color with a portrait of the saint in a medallion with the legend "Sainte Anna".
the legend "Sainte Anna", presented in a recent frame to preserve it.

    DIMENSIONS: H: 12 cm x 7 cm. Good condition.

The traditional canivet is an image painted in oil, gouache or watercolor, framed by a finely openwork border. This chiselled decoration reproduces motifs inspired by textile lace: arabesques, flowers, foliage, sacred hearts, crosses, chalices, etc. Using a penknife, artists cut parchment or laid paper, often perforated with a needle or nail, with extreme precision.
There's a clear distinction between French canivets - extremely fine, lacy like aerial embroidery - and those from the Germanic zone (Bavaria, Flanders, Switzerland), which are more geometric, less delicate and often composed of lattices or repetitive motifs.
