* Pierre Chanel (1803-1841) was a Catholic saint and martyr of Oceania. A Catholic missionary priest, Pierre Chanel was a member of the Society of Mary (Marist Fathers) and was sent as a missionary to Oceania. He arrived on the South Pacific island of Futuna in November 1837 to evangelize the population. His work aroused opposition from King Niuliki's entourage, and he was killed on April 28, 1841. Beatified in 1889, he was canonized on June 12, 1954 as Saint Pierre Chanel, martyr of Oceania. His feast day is April 28. Several shrines have been erected in his name, including the Saint-Pierre-Chanel basilica in Poi on the island of Futuna.
