Description: This chest of drawers, with its refined elegance, stands out due to its subtle curve and four drawers arranged in three rows on the front. Crafted with rosewood veneer, it is framed with violet wood, all accentuated by boxwood or stained sycamore inlays. The top is adorned with Belgian Rance marble, adding a touch of luxury to the ensemble.

Historical Context: This fine French piece, typical of the Louis XV period around 1765-1770, is stamped by Jean-François Lapie, who became a Master in 1763, and also bears the JME mark of the Parisian Cabinetmakers' Guild.

Condition: The chest of drawers is in very good condition, with customary restorations and maintenance, and a pad-applied varnish. The 18th-century marble top may have been added later.

Biography: Jean-François Lapie (1720-1797), a Parisian cabinetmaker, obtained his mastership on December 15, 1763. A first cousin of Nicolas Alexandre and Jean Lapie, he began his career late on Rue de Charenton before permanently settling on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, where he lived until his death in 1797. His creations, characterized by classical lines, primarily used mahogany, palisander, and rosewood. Among his notable works is a unique chest of drawers that was part of the furnishings of Viscount Beuret at the Château de Dampierre.

His son, Charles Lapie, born in Paris on January 27, 1757, was one of the victors of the Bastille. He served in the gendarmerie during the Reign of Terror before continuing the cabinetmaking trade in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. In 1833, he received a pension of 250 francs as a veteran hero of July 14th.

Furniture stamped by Jean-François Lapie is rare and sought after for its craftsmanship and significance in the history of 18th-century French furniture.
