About Jean-Chrysostome Stumpff:Jean-Chrysostome Stumpff (1731-1806)Master on August 27, 1766, like many 18th-century Parisian cabinetmakers, was of German origin.
Born in Swabia, Stumpff established himself as a free craftsman on rue Saint Nicolas, where he remained after obtaining his master's degree in 1766.
His stamp can be found on numerous works in rosewood veneer and Far Eastern lacquer, with geometric marquetry.
But what fit this cabinetmaker's fame was his highly original trompe l'oeil marquetry, simulating small cubes and crosses in relief, which was a huge success in 1770. A half-moon piece of furniture bearing his mark appeared at the 1882 Decorative Arts Exhibition.
Most of his production is in the Transition style, but his Louis XV (quite rare) and Louis XVI furniture is still of excellent workmanship.
