Pierre Roussel (1723-1782) Cabinetmaker. Maîtrise August 21, 1745. A highly skilled marquetry craftsman, Roussel left an abundant and diverse output of excellent quality. Awarded his Master's degree in cabinetmaking in 1745, Pierre Roussel set up shop on rue de Charonne, in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, under the sign "L'Image de Saint Pierre". Thanks to his skills as a cabinetmaker and, above all, as an outstanding marquetry craftsman, he quickly acquired a high reputation. In 1762, he became a sworn member of his community. By 1767, he was considered one of the best cabinetmakers of his time, as confirmed by the 1769 "Almanach d'indication générale ou du Vray mérite", which cited him as one of the leading cabinetmakers in Paris. Highly esteemed by his colleagues, he became a deputy of the cabinetmakers' body in 1777, then a syndic two years later. His abundant and varied productions adapted to all 18th-century styles, with elegance and refinement. Numerous Louis XV commodes, with rosewood or violetwood veneers, are decorated with floral marquetry or ribbon bows. Lacquer and Far Eastern landscapes are also often used in decoration. Furniture from the Transition and Louis XVI periods features many works inlaid with architectural landscapes of cities, rivers and ports, not to mention the geometric marquetry designs often employed. The inventory of his merchandise, drawn up after his death, proves the prosperity of his business, which his wife took over from her sons.
