An exceptional and prestigious display cabinet in molded and richly carved walnut.
This piece of fine cabinetmaking corresponds to the so-called "deluxe" version of the famous umbel series, catalogued and illustrated in full-page format in the reference work by Alastair Duncan and Georges de Bartha, *Gallé Furniture*, Antique Collectors' Club, page 310, plate 46. It is distinguished by its sculptural execution, pushed to its naturalistic extreme.
The Grand Pediment: Unlike classic models with a simple cornice, this display cabinet is surmounted by a sumptuous and substantial asymmetrical pediment in solid wood, entirely carved in openwork, depicting umbels unfurling in the wind.
Sculpture in the Round: Inside the cabinet, the structure breaks free from traditional furniture: a magnificent umbellifer stem, sculpted in relief, emerges from the back, rising to the center of the display case and unfurling to support the carved upper shelf.
Marquetry Decoration: The back of the cabinet features a large marquetry panel made of precious and exotic woods depicting flowering umbellifers beneath a cloudy sky. The solid base of the door displays a second marquetry panel with a sinuous floral motif.
Architecture & Base: The cabinet rests on a sinuous, ribbed base, reinforced by corner brackets and lower rails deeply openwork with botanical motifs. The interior shelves feature superb polylobed cutouts imitating the curve of foliage.
Signature: Signed "Gallé" in fine marquetry within the decoration.
Condition: Excellent condition, original key, superb waxed finish.
