A rare Art Nouveau mahogany desk and matching armchair by Georges Nowak (1884-1956), a Parisian cabinetmaker of confidential but remarkable talent.
Established at 47 rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, in the heart of the historic woodworking district, Nowak was part of the decorative revival of the early 20th century, creating furniture with slender, harmonious lines that echoed the best examples of the Parisian and Nancy schools, without ever yielding to the mass production of the great houses such as Majorelle or Gallé.
This desk features a refined architecture: the curved legs extend under the top in a high-relief carved decoration depicting a naturalistic bouquet of pansies. The four corners of the top are rounded and elegantly supported by these chiseled motifs.
The doucine belt accommodates two drawers with softened corners, adorned with gilded bronze handles in plant forms. Two discreet side shelves, sliding with a gilded bronze eyelet, complete the functionality of the ensemble.
The armchair, also in mahogany, echoes the aesthetic codes of the desk: recessed armrests, gentle curves, and a seat upholstered in green velvet (showing slight wear), highlighted with tapestry nails.
